Women of The Year: Reese Witherspoon

For the past few months I have really been going back and forth with this topic, trying to find the right person with the right qualities and to be honest, from day one there was really only one contender who fit into the spot as Women of the year.

I have watched Reese Witherspoon since 1999, in her Cruel Intentions days where she met and fell in love with her then husband, Ryan Phillippe. The following years most of her roles were cute and funny or romantic and sweet but never anything over the top or raunchy.

So with no scandals under her belt you wonder why I pick her as women of the year, well just because of that simple fact. I’m an old fashioned-good girl myself (born and raised 8 years as a Southern gal in Texas) and with similar qualities to Reese’s down home Southern Belle charm, I find it hard to identify with any of other starlets in the spotlight these days. Most celebs are famous for getting nude or stripping for XX magazines or have starred in sex tapes and to these women, this is their claim to fame, to me it exudes low-self esteem and humiliation. Imagine if my family heard there was an inappropriate tape or photos circulating around the net with me as the main star! I’d die of shame but it seems that having as scandal has somehow become the norm and most of young Hollywood has some sort of drunken, sex tape on their resume and the shocking part, they are proud of it!!

Reese on the other hand has always had my respect, in 2008 when she and Ryan when through a public divorce Reese keep the private details to herself and never really slammed Ryan for cheating on her. Think back to Shanna Moakler who divorced Travis Barker and throw a divorce party where the cake featured a bloody groom falling down an iced staircase.  In the day’s following, photos of a smiling Shanna were plastered all over the Internet and in celebrity magazines.  This is something Reese would never do. Marriage and divorce are a private thing and not something to be taken lightly.

Last Sunday at the MTV music awards Reese spoke her mind about the new bad girl craze that seems to be the latest trend in Hollywood, stating “I get it, girls, that it’s cool to be a bad girl, but it is possible to make it in Hollywood without doing a reality show. When I came up in this business, if you made a sex tape, you were embarrassed and you hid it under your bed.” Are you listening Kim? Paris?Witherspoon continued, “And if you took naked pictures of yourself on your cell phone, you hide your face, people!”

Your dang right you hid your face but do you think any of these girls are hiding their face? Probably not, especially those who are riding the sex-tape-15-minutes-of-fame-wave for as long as they can and going as far as to pose half naked in men’s magazines.  Really, how lady-like is that?

In her Best Actress acceptance speech, Reese said tearfully, "My grandmother was one of the biggest inspirations in my life. She taught me how to be a real woman to have strength and self respect, and to never give those things away."

And with that, I proclaim Reese Witherspoon as Women of The Year! Reese has always remained true to her values and to herself. She puts her family and children first and demands self-respect by not being photographed drunk or showing her nude crotch as she exits a car. You’ll never see her mug shot plastered all over celebrity magazines.
So congrats Reese for staying true and remaining real in a world full of low-self esteemed women and girls willing to sale their bodies and objectify their bodies and lower their standards for a few full spread pages in a magazine.

  1. Yup. I 100000000% agree. She's seriously a great role model - and a great fashion role model. She's not overridden with scandals like a lot of celebs are, she has great kids, and she can really act. Love her - great choice :D
